If you suffer from moderate to severe acne, then you know just how frustrating it can be to try to get rid of, or even just reduce, your acne. While there are some over-the-counter items that can help, the best way to see improvements in your acne is going to the dermatologist. The dermatologist will be able to treat your acne in ways that you couldn't on your own. This article will discuss 4 ways your dermatologist may choose to treat your acne.

Topical Treatment

A very common type of treatment that can be effective for reducing your acne is topical treatment. These are generally creams and ointments that your dermatologist can only prescribe to you that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retinoid, and some type of antibiotic. This combination does a good job of not only treating the acne that you currently have on your face, but also helping to keep the acne from spreading to new areas.

Internal Treatment

If topical treatments don't seem to be getting the job done on their own, then your dermatologist may either switch to an internal treatment or combine it with a topical treatment. The internal treatments generally come in the form of a pill and contain some type of medication or hormone that can help with your acne, such as an antibiotic, birth control, or isotretinoin.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is generally done if both topical or internal treatments don't work. The chemical peel involves putting a chemical solution on the skin that causes it to blister and peel off. As the begins to peel off of your face, fresh skin is then able to come through. This skin is not only less prone to the acne, but it also shows a reduction in any previous acne scars that may have been present.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is another form of treatment that your dermatologist may use on you that targets the bacteria that actually causes the acne on your face. The light of the laser kills any of this bacteria that is presently on your face, thus reducing the spread of acne that you could potentially have. This can also minimize the acne that your currently have on your face because the bacteria is being killed. Lastly, it can potentially reduce the appearance of old acne scars on your face, which is something that many people with acne have.
